The trail is not a test you have to study for. If you can walk out the door, you already know how to hike.
People make hiking sound complicated. Gear lists, training plans, the right shoes, the perfect route. It can start to feel like something you need permission to do. But here is the truth: if you can walk out your front door, you already know how to hike.
Start where you are
The best trail is the one closest to you. You do not need a destination trip or a full weekend. A short loop before work, a quiet walk at sunset, a stroll with your dog on a dirt path all count. Hiking is just walking somewhere that makes you feel a little more alive.
Begin with what fits your day. Twenty minutes is enough to reset. An hour is a small adventure. Let the distance grow on its own.
Keep it simple
You need less than the internet tells you. Comfortable shoes, water, and a little sun protection will carry you a long way on our local trails. Tell someone where you are going. Turn around before you are tired, not after.
As you go more often, you will naturally figure out what you want to add. Until then, do not let gear be the reason you stay home.
The trail meets you where you are
Some days you will feel strong and want to push. Other days you will want to wander slowly and notice things. Both are hiking. The trail does not judge your pace, your fitness, or your reason for being there.
That is what makes it such a generous kind of recreation. It welcomes the seasoned trail runner and the person who just decided to get off the couch, side by side.
